Peter and Josi's May Newsletter 2019

Peter and Josi’s Newsletter
May  2019

Dears Friends,

Greetings from Brazil!  And belated Feliz Pascoa! (Passover) as we would say in Brazil
The photo of us in rural Shropshire where we stayed in January and enjoyed wonderful hospitality…..How time flies and how we miss those times with friends too!
Since returning to Iparana, school is now well underway and also Crianças do Rei project.

We are having some of the wettest weather in living memory, one gentleman who is seventy and lived here all his life, said he has never seen this amount of rain.

Since our last newsletter and sharing about our needs  - We are very grateful for the donations coming in to go towards helping fix and repair the school structure as we realise we cannot put off maintenance issues any longer  There comes a time when making do….wont do especially with maintaining a school. We have to maintain to correct standard - one of those priority areas is the front of the school and entrance  - the photo shows work so far and we are very grateful to the Lord for the help provided.

We still need to raise finance for finishing the wall with ceramic wall tiles -  We still have some way to go to reach our target of 6,000 UK pounds…... Here is a couple of videos showing some of the challenges we face -  Video of front of the school https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVJnHeJbLwY&feature=youtu.be
and school structure  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq4VMYOaG7E&feature=youtu.be

We see a lot of sadness - Josi and myself were talking, a week or two weeks ago about this and praying......It's incredibly heartbreaking....and we are very sad.      But how can we help?......
When you realize just how difficult life is for many poor families here and the government system to take care of them is extremely inadequate There are a lot of broken lives and we need to bring hope to break the cycle - Hope which is both supernatural and tangible.   When we see situations like the ones we see...and there are many tragic cases here….it’s overwhelming -  Brazil is going through a very tough period, food has become very expensive and a lot of families are struggling. Children coming to the Criancas do Rei project and Escola Cristã Água Viva arriving hungry…...With all this we have parents who are struggling, who owe the school over 2,000 reais...but who pays the teachers salaries?  This is the price being paid to preach the Gospel to the poor…..and the only way to keep things in perspective is to look at the great price Jesus paid to reach the poor with the good news.         Please pray.

Charles Wesley’s - Hymn “And Can it be”….  Is still as inspiring and relevant today as ever...May it continue to inspire the Church and Christians the world over to make known the reality of God’s great love real to all who Jesus came to save.

The Broad and Narrow Way - North American Edition 1855

Since last year I have been researching various old evangelical pictures. ( I am supposed to be writing a book about the Broad and Narrow Way picture) …..researching and collecting all the material is quite a challenge and I also stumble across quite a few pictures and artists I was not aware of. One such is John Warner Barber (February 2, 1798 – June 1885) he was an engraver and historian whose books of state, national, and local history in the USA. The Connecticut engraver was also a committed Christian. I discovered he made a picture called the Broad and Narrow Road...which was also called  called "A miniature of the World in the 19th century"  which in the hands of American missionaries, was said to have been the principal means  of converting the Queen of the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii)  to Christianity. And has been assured the picture has been a means under God of turning several from the wicked course to the path of Life.
The Broad and Narrow Road

In due course I hope to have it translated into Portuguese, and prepare teaching about the picture for the children at school…...

J W Barber’s work was very popular among Bible believing Christians and was reproduced throughout many Christian books – profusely illustrated to disciple and educate Bible principles and Gospel message. It could be said Barber’s work was instrumental in moulding the worldview of a generation during his lifetime and beyond, influencing and helping to define beliefs and principles which help make nations become great. The history of the United States would be very different if it were not for individuals like J W Barber fulfilling their destiny and calling in Christ, living out fruitful and godly lives for their Saviour.  To see more of the picture and more information please visit the link http://pictureswithamessage.com/100/100.htm    Please pray - The book I am writing...I enjoy immensely, but I never imagined just how much history needs to be covered and investigated as I discover much has been either forgotten or is off the beaten track as far as popular church history. But I wonder just how many people today know how God blessed our forefathers in the faith?  Looking at the story of missions and the church I see something great and magnificent back in those days and wonder why we don't hear so much about those who blazed a trail? And blaze they certainly did for the glory of God - We need to re-dig the ancient wells which our spiritual forfathers drank from, "Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them." Genesis 26:18

We no doubt have a fairly good idea who todays philistines are trying to stop up the ancient wells....but we need to make sure we redig the wells our spiritual forefathers drank from.... The water is still there....
                          Prayer and Praise!
Since returning to Brazil we have had a drop in regular support. But we are very grateful for those who have been so faithfully supporting us for many years and we do understand life and situations change….we are just so blessed and grateful God has given us such faithful and loyal friends and pray God's richest blessings. We are also grateful to the Lord directing new friends and supporters to help, May God bless you all for partnering with us in missions!

Please pray - We are planning to attend a National YWAM Leaders meeting, next week at Sao Luiz do Maranhao, North Brazil….. and would be grateful for prayer and provision.

Please keep praying for the Art Gallery and Art competition …….We are certain these two projects will make a very big  difference… But we do need to find partners able to help.

Please pray for the structure of the school and project, also a number of items need replacing which are broken….one is the school loudspeaker which must be getting on for 14 years old - it broke just as we are getting ready for the school Mother's day party! Thankfully we were able to borrow one at short notice.  The washing machine has been broken along time, and various pieces of equipment and tools - But we praise God for the wonderful  provision to help fix the front of the school gate and wall and for all the many blessings in different ways the Lord provides.

Please continue to pray for the Disciple Nations Alliance Arts Workshop in July in Bogota, Columbia organised by Yarley Nino of ADN/DNA  in Latin America. It has been an honour to have been invited to attend by Darrow Miller.  I sometimes make comments on Darrows Blog page…..one subject in particular caught my attention was about the parallel of the rise of the Nazi’s with today’s Social Justice Warriors   I shared some thoughts and some sketches made during the School of Jewish Studies with YWAM in 2000. With this and all the many things we do, we ask for prayer and grateful to all who help

Till next time…..

With love and best wishes!

Peter and Josi’s Newsletter
March  2019

Dears Friends,

Greetings from Brazil!

What a trip we had to the UK!    We safely returned to Iparana on the 5th of February.
Thank you to all who helped to make a difference for our stay in the UK, and thank you to all
for prayers and support!

I think we got to see the church in action......the body of Christ.......and we are grateful!
Before we travelled from Brazil we were wondering how all this was going to work out.....
But we have seen many answers to prayer and you were part of this....Thank you!

Since arriving back in Brazil, we needed a good rest and re-adjust.  January was quite
packed with things we had to do after we reached Shropshire…you may have gathered by
watching the link https://youtu.be/m4WEFCS7o_o  from our last news, showing pictures and
cards I had done over the years.  When I saw what was in storage - It was like the Jurassic
Park of technology - Boxes of message tapes and outdated equipment….Technology has
changed so much after only 11 years! but I did find some real treasures -  Years ago a kind
friend had given me a video cassette of the complete series of Thora on the Straight and
Narrow 1993 - So I digitised it and put it on youtube...the BBC has no plans to release the
series. The series can be found at the link http://pictureswithamessage.com/99/cat99.htm (Uploaded under Fair use and Fair dealing for nonprofit educational purposes, etc)

Another treasure was a book - A biography - Gawin Kirkham - Open Air Evangelist -  Which I digitised and is now available at the link http://pictureswithamessage.com/98/cat98.htm  I visited  Gawin Kirkham’s grave in North London during the Christmas period on a rather chilly December day…..I took the tube from Wimbledon, South London….it was quite a long journey.     Before I visited the grave I had already asked cemetery staff for assistance and they kindly took photos after removing ivy which had encased the headstone for years. I went there and worked on cleaning the grave and removing the rest of the undergrowth  - Some of you may be wondering why on earth would you want to do this!? - Well, I want to tell you Gawin Kirkham is still preaching! The trip to Gawin Kirkham’s grave was quite an adventure - I bought a gallon of bleach and scrubbing brush to clean the headstone, which worked well. To read more visit the Art blog below https://iparanastudio.blogspot.com/2019/02/gawin-kirkham-open-air-evangelist_16.html

Storage in Shropshire - With all the storage I had to resolve and a host of other things to long
to write - finally at the 11 hour we resolved questions of storing pictures, cards  books and
personal items! Praise the Lord! And so we flew out of the UK on the 4th of February.

And now we are finally back at Iparana, Brazil…..Meeting friends in the UK who take special
interest in our work and ministry in Brazil was very special……  special thanks to all those who
organised meetings for us and those who took care of us along the way! - We didn't have time
to see all our friends, but hopefully we won't leave our next visit to the UK such a long time.
(Photo - Dorothy enjoying the snow in North Shropshire!)

One of our friends while we were in the UK  expressed we would return to Brazil better
supported than when we arrived in the UK.   Well, we were certainly indeed blessed the
short time we stayed in the UK…...while ongoing regular support - we still need to work on
...Hopefully next time we visit the UK God willing we can visit more churches and share more.

Back to school in Iparana!
March is also Carnival time here in Brazil, earlier this month, sadly it was wild time of partying,
excess and days of madness for millions. For too many the Carnival ends in tragedy and deep
sorrow. -   How do we respond to this? How do we show children a better way? Here at Escola
Crista Água Viva we celebrate where the only true joy can be found “Minha Alegria é a minha
Senhor Jesus!” (My Joy is my Lord Jesus!)  Children are taught where real lasting joy is - for life
and eternity -  Jesus Christ! And talking about the subject of Joy - The joy of the Lord is our
strength!  We definitely need it! Last years financial challenges with parents and unpaid school
fees still exist and recently we had to let three teachers go as we attempt to keep finances in order.
We serve a God who has the cattle on a thousand hills and we rejoice that He is our provider
bringing provision for the needs of the school! Education in Brazil is in crisis…..and the need
for Christian schools is greater than ever…..A positive future for  Brazil depends on educating
children with Biblical truth and family values. Children will indeed grow up to be tomorrow's
citizens, taking their place in society - And what they will be tomorrow as adults, depends on
what they are being taught today as children.

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not
depart from it” Proverbs 22:6

Maintaining the structure of the school -  Some of the maintenance issues cannot be put off.
Looking at all things needed with everything, we estimate a cost at least 6,000 UK pounds for
repairs, renewing and painting existing structure.   The roof is still in place - In the photo part of
the roof is held down with strong rope. Please pray in agreement and faith with us - God
certainly hears our prayers...He just needs our agreement together in prayer for Him to do over
and above all we can ever think or imagine!
Adventures in faith
Since our return, the swimming pool has been a constant reminder to us of who our faithful
God is……After starting to build it it in January 2017 we never knew when it would be finished -
But God did.. and we rejoice and give thanks! After the donation came in last year specifically
for the swimming pool to be finished we certainly know God hears and answers prayer in
amazing ways!

Picture - In Darkest England and the Way Out

In 1890....England faced a different kind of Brexit - A 1890 Salvation Army print just restored and
now made available at my online shop.. A book of the same name was written by General Booth.
The title In Darkest England was chosen after General Booth heard about the travels of Stanley in
darkest Africa. General Booth was not just concerned for the salvation of the lost - but had a robust
vision to help the poor and fought for social justice. The Salvation Army was in the vanguard bringing
practical help as well as spiritual to the poor and disadvantaged.  For more information about the
picture and explanation please visit http://pictureswithamessage.com/95/199.htm

As I look at the picture In Darkest England and the Way Out…..It challenges me to think -
should I make a picture like this for Brazil?…..what would General Booth of the Salvation Army
make of the challenges here? And what would be his answer today? I don't think  have to go very
far to find that answer - These are the words from his final address to the Salvation Army in 1912
at the Royal Albert Hall...3 months later at age 83 he was promoted to glory….

“While women weep, as they do now, I'll fight.
While little children go hungry, as they do now,  I'll fight.
While men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I'll fight.
While there is a drunkard left, While there is a poor lost girl upon the streets,
While there remains one dark soul without the light of God,
I'll fight - I'll fight to the very end!”
General William Booth

Prayer and Praise!

We give thanks to God for all that has happened the last months - It's been amazing to see how it all
worked out…...hopefully we will be able to visit the UK again in the not too distant future.

Please keep praying for the Art Gallery and Art competition …….We are certain these two projects
will make a very big  difference… But we do need to find partners able to help.

Please pray we will make the right connections for future support - We know the School and
Project Crianças do Rei needs a lot of help - or it falls on our shoulders bearing the burden
of providing Christian Education in a very poor area.

Please pray for the structure of the school and project - We praise God for the amazing provision
of the swimming pool!

Please pray…...We have a few meetings/conferences with YWAM this year we have been invited
or need to attend..  Also it has been an honour to have been invited by Darrow Miller
